What’s at Stake

What is at stake in Edo State’s farming sector is nothing less than food for our people, jobs for our youth, and prosperity for our economy.

Our Commitment

Our commitment is to transform agriculture from subsistence to agribusiness, ensuring Edo becomes a food basket for Nigeria and a hub for agricultural exports.

Food Security:

  • Edo has fertile land and a favorable climate, but food production is far below potential.

  • Rising food prices and dependence on imports threaten household security.

  • outh Unemployment: Farming is still largely subsistence-based, unattractive to young people. Without modernization, agriculture cannot absorb Edo’s growing workforce.
  • Economic Growth: Agriculture could be Edo’s largest wealth generator, but poor infrastructure, limited processing, and weak market systems hold it back. Untapped opportunities in cash crops (palm oil, cocoa, rubber) and staples (cassava, rice, maize) mean lost revenue and exports.
  • Rural Development: Many rural communities lack access roads, irrigation, storage, and electricity. Without investment, rural–urban migration will worsen, leaving villages depopulated.
  • Global Competition: Neighbouring states are investing heavily in agribusiness. If Edo does not act, it risks falling behind in regional food and export markets.
  • Build infrastructure that’s ready for a changing climate
Key Facts
  • Modernizing Agriculture Mechanize farming with tractors, irrigation, and harvesters accessible through cooperatives. Introduce digital agriculture tools—drones, soil testing, and mobile apps for farmers.
  • Youth and Women Empowerment Launch state-wide agripreneur programs with training, land access, and credit. Make farming profitable and attractive to young graduates and entrepreneurs.
  • Agro-Processing and Value Addition Establish agro-industrial parks across senatorial districts. Support rice mills, cassava starch factories, palm oil refineries, and cocoa processing plants. Encourage packaging, branding, and exports.
  • Infrastructure and Market Systems Build farm-to-market roads, cold rooms, and silos to reduce post-harvest losses. Create an Edo Commodity Exchange for transparent pricing and structured trade.

Our Roadmap to Change

Vision and Goal: To transform Edo State into a self-sufficient food hub that guarantees food security, creates employment, drives agro-industrial growth, and positions Edo as a net exporter of agricultural produce.

Key Pillars of the Roadmap
  • A. Land and Resource Mobilization Conduct a statewide land audit to identify arable land for cultivation. Establish land banks to make farmland accessible to youth, cooperatives, and investors. Enforce policies against land grabbing and encourage secure tenure for farmers.
  • B. Mechanization and Technology Adoption Provide farmers access to tractors, harvesters, and irrigation systems through state-backed leasing programs. Encourage the use of drones, soil-testing kits, and digital platforms for precision farming. Promote climate-smart agriculture to address flooding, erosion, and drought risks.
  • C. Finance and Agribusiness Support Set up an Edo State Agricultural Development Fund with low-interest loans for farmers. Attract private and diaspora investment into commercial farming and agro-processing. Strengthen farmers’ cooperatives to improve access to credit and bulk inputs.
  • D. Crop and Livestock Expansion Prioritize food staples (rice, maize, yam, cassava) for food security. Revive cash crops (cocoa, palm oil, rubber) for export revenue. Expand livestock and aquaculture for affordable protein supply. Promote horticulture and vegetables for urban food markets.
  • E. Agro-Processing and Industrialization Build agro-industrial parks and processing hubs across senatorial zones. Encourage rice mills, cassava starch factories, and palm oil refineries. Support local packaging and branding to enhance market value.

  • G. Research, Training, and Capacity Building Strengthen agricultural extension services for farmer education. Partner with universities, research institutes, and international agencies for improved crop and livestock technologies. Create agripreneur programs to attract young people into farming.
  • H. Governance and Partnerships Set up a State Food Security Council to coordinate agricultural policies. Promote public-private partnerships (PPP) for large-scale farming. Collaborate with federal agencies and international donors for technical and financial support.
  • 3. Expected Outcomes Food self-sufficiency in Edo within 5–7 years. Massive employment opportunities across farming, logistics, and agribusiness. Edo as a regional agricultural hub in South-South Nigeria. Reduction of hunger, poverty, and youth unemployment. A strong base for export-led agricultural growth.
  • Our party’s agricultural agenda is built on land reform, technology adoption, agro-industrialization, and youth empowerment. With clear policies and decisive leadership, Edo State will not just feed itself, but feed the nation and the world.
