The GAF envisions an Edo State with safe, efficient, and reliable road and transport systems that:

  • Connect rural communities to urban markets,

  • Ease urban traffic congestion,

  • Reduce transport costs, and

  • Boost investment, tourism, and trade.

Our Commitment

  • Comprehensive Road Rehabilitation

    • Launch a Statewide Road Renewal Programme targeting both urban and rural roads.

    • Prioritise farm-to-market access roads to support food supply chains.

    • Partner with federal authorities to maintain key highways crossing Edo.

  • Infrastructure for Growth

    • Build and upgrade bridges, drainage systems, and rural culverts to ensure year-round access.

    • Designate logistics hubs and truck terminals to reduce urban congestion.

  • Road Safety and Security

    • Strengthen collaboration with FRSC and security agencies to reduce accidents and roadside crime.

    • Install streetlights, CCTV cameras, and patrol systems along major routes.

What is at Stake

  1. Dilapidated Road Network

    • Many state and local roads are in poor condition, making travel difficult and costly.

    • Rural farmers face barriers to transporting their produce to markets, resulting in waste and reduced income.

  2. Urban Congestion

    • Benin City and other urban centres face chronic traffic congestion due to poor planning, lack of traffic management systems, and inadequate public transport.

  3. Economic Growth at Risk

    • Poor infrastructure discourages investment, limits trade, and increases the cost of doing business.

    • Logistics companies and SMEs struggle with high transport costs and delays.

  4. Safety Concerns

    • Bad roads contribute to frequent accidents and insecurity, particularly on highways prone to robbery and kidnapping.

  5. Environmental Impact

    • A lack of coordinated transport planning exacerbates fuel consumption, air pollution, and urban sprawl.

Roadmap for Roads and Transportation in Edo State

Step by Step Toward a Better Future

Phase 1: Immediate (0–2 Years) – Laying the Foundation
  • Statewide Audit: Conduct a full survey of road conditions, traffic patterns, and transport needs across LGAs.
  • Emergency Repairs: Fix critical bad spots on highways, rural farm roads, and urban bottlenecks.
  • Traffic Management: Deploy traffic lights, signage, and mobile enforcement in Benin City and major towns.
  • Farm-to-Market Access: Begin rehabilitation of feeder roads to reduce post-harvest losses for farmers.
  • Mass Transit Pilot: Introduce state-backed buses on key routes in Benin City to test a public transport system.
Phase 2: Medium-Term (3–5 Years) – Expansion and Integration
  • Comprehensive Road Renewal Programme: Reconstruct strategic roads linking towns, LGAs, and major highways.
  • Urban Transit System: Expand bus rapid transit (BRT)-style systems with dedicated lanes in Benin City.
  • Logistics Hubs: Establish truck parks and inter-city terminals to decongest roads and markets.
  • Rural Access Program: Build bridges, culverts, and all-season rural roads for farmers and traders.
  • Safety & Security: Roll out CCTV cameras, solar streetlights, and patrol systems along major corridors.
Phase 3: Long-Term (6–10 Years) – Modernization & Sustainability
  • Intermodal Transport: Develop linkages between roads, rail, and waterways (e.g., inland water transport where feasible).
  • Technology Integration: Introduce smart traffic management systems and cashless ticketing for public transport.
  • Green Mobility: Encourage adoption of electric vehicles and build charging stations in key cities.
  • Urban Redesign: Upgrade Benin City’s transport infrastructure with walkways, cycling lanes, and modern bus depots.
  • Sustainable Financing: Establish a Transport Infrastructure Fund supported by PPPs, diaspora bonds, and development partners.
